How to Tie the Duncan Loop Knot!
In this knot tutorial, Brian Flechsig from Mad River Outfitters breaks down how easy it is to tie a Duncan Loop Knot......also known as a Uni Knot or Uni Loop.
"If you are wondering what the difference is between the Duncan Loop vs Uni Knot, there is actually no difference with the exception of the name. The Duncan Loop or Duncan Knot was originally named after Norman Duncan who developed the fishing knot in the early 1960s. Although, Vic Dunaway, a former editor at the Miami Herald, is known for popularizing this knot as the Uni Knot in a fishing book that he wrote in 1970."

Only 800 usd........a bargain
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
I struggled understanding leaders for 30 years, then I watched this video. My fishing improved almost immediately.
Thanks for watching and happy to help!
"That must be a good thing" had me laughing hard
Thanks for watching.
Damn, thats a lot
Agreed. Big one.
Good Morning young man !!
Good morning! Thanks for tuning in.
The force is strong in this one
Thanks for watching.
😂you fly fishers are like folk singers, I learnt this one from Blind Mellon Chittlin while i was working my gap year down on McKinley’s Plantation.
Always better with a good story.
@@Madriveroutfitters absolutely :)
You don’t need a Ross reel or a sage reel but the day you get one you realize how low quality all the other ones are
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Brian I will put this to Good use 🎣🎣🎣🙏
Thanks for watching.
What is the breaking strength of this Duncan loop knot?
Please send any and all questions directly to Brian and he’ll be happy to help. You can email him or call him. Thanks.
If that wasn’t Flip Pallot crashing your intro it was his stunt double. Love my Presentation 2300! Thank you for bringing us along!
It was in fact…..Flip Pallot. He and Brian were teaching one of their schools.
Looks like a uni loop
From Google: "If you are wondering what the difference is between the Duncan Loop vs Uni Knot, there is actually no difference with the exception of the name. The Duncan Loop or Duncan Knot was originally named after Norman Duncan who developed fishing knot in the early 1960s."

Heard about your from grab bag in Michigan after I bought my first fly fishing rod! Great tips thank you I can wait to get out there in a couple hours 😂.
Thanks for being here.
Subscribed and liked. Do you have an Amazon store?
Thanks for being here! We do not have an Amazon store.....but a real store. www.madriveroutfitters.com/
@@Madriveroutfitters Made a purchase today. It was very easy. What flies do you suggest for small lakes in central NY (finger lakes area)? Going after Carp, Bass, Perch mainly.
Another question; how do you mark double taper versus weight forward?
Please send your questions directly to the folks at the shop and they will be happy to help. That's what they do. You can e-mail them or call them. They do not monitor the comments here but of course do monitor the shop. Every e-mail gets a response, every phone call is answered. Thanks.
Like the innovation but it’s ridiculously big
That's kinda the idea. Thanks for watching.
Fordyce loop works great to!
Thanks for watching.
What kind of fisherman is concerned with such things ? Fly fisherman:-)
Pretty sure that spin and bait casters pay attention to retrieve ratio? Listed on every reel?
I always used a short piece of Amnesia to a perfection loop if I wanted a loop to loop connection of my leader.

Nice one!
Thanks for being here.
Being a fan of match pole fishing, it's interesting to see the similarities, especially the use of loop knots and line diameters. Love this fly fishing channel. Keep up the excellent work. 👍
Thanks for watching.
I met Flip in my state of Maine 20 years ago and he autographed my fly vest with a Sharpie. I still have the vest, but unfortunately his autograph has bleached out from the sun. Great guy, love to see him. I loved his original episodes of fly fishing.
Thanks for watching. Flip is one of the greats for sure!
Great idea, thanks for sharing. I'll do this on my lines in the future.
Thanks for watching.
As always Brian, this is one of the best videos I've seen on tying a loop knot. I'm of the age that my eyes and dexterity aren't what they were 20 or 30 years ago. I wanted an easier loop knot to tie on my streamers. I'll do this but use a split ring/keychain kinda thing that's on my MRO sling pack to hold the fly while tying the knot. Keep them coming man!
Thanks for watching! As long as folks keep supporting the shop.....we'll keep making videos. Stay tuned!
I didn’t get those extra videos on building the leaders
Feel free to call or e-mail Brian at the shop if any questions. He's always happy to help.
The Uni or Duncan! What a classic! Great video crew!!
Apparently he knows it as a Duncan Loop?
Other than leaving the loop open, the Duncan Loop is tied exactly the same as the uni knot, a staple line to terminal tackle knot. The tightening of the tag end with pliers effectively limits the possibility that the knot will slide and close the loop.
Thanks for learning us this knot!
Thanks for watching.
Great job with the simplicity and camera work Brian. Thanks!! 😃
Thanks for watching.
Cutting the loop of the flyline to introduce another loop-loop connection? I‘m moving over to the do-not-cut-the-loop fraction
He explains in the video why a loop in the leader is acceptable. Just sayin'
Stay tuned for when Flip explains it as well......but free to go.......we'll get the door if you need.
MRO teaches that the removal of the loop in the end of the fly line isn’t necessarily so much about omitting the loop to loop connection as much as it is removing the large chunk of mass created not only by the doubled up fly line but then also the addition of a thick, similarly stiff butt section material. That particular connection is what causes issues for some folks. Energy transfer between leader material loops is negligible. If you do trim your snelled butt section back far enough to simply add a perfection loop, the connection and energy transfer from that heavy mono to mono/loop to loop connection is far superior to the “speed bump” created by the original factory welded loop. Sometimes the physics just don’t add up for some folks and that’s ok. It’s all just fishin’ 🤙🏻
I get it, I'm in the micro loop camp, very small loop small as a tippet ring less spray when I false cast
@@Wild_Bill_91 very well said!!!!! You looking for a job?
Loop-y!
Thanks for watching.

Nice work! Thanks for watching.
Please i want to learn this one sir how can i you contact please

Any recommendations on a budget 12wt reel with good drag? (that will handle tarpon)
Sure! Give a shout to the folks at the shop and they will be happy to help. That's what they do. You can e-mail them or call them. Thanks.
Absolutely Brian 💯
Thanks for watching.
Is this what people think all of us fly anglers are?? 😭
That we like to take care of gear? Hope so!!
Good tip. Also keep the box and write the date of purchase on the box.
Thanks for watching.
Hooked my self this year while trout fishing and it was DEEP. It was barbless and pulled right out.
We always fish barbless hooks!!!!
Awesome. . Makes it so simple
Thanks for watching.
I was born and raised in Columbus. I absolutely couldn’t wait to get out. I moved to Florida as soon as could… to fish. I fished some back home (bass), but always thought that Ohio sucked with regard to fishing. In many ways, it does. In other ways, it’s an untapped gem for fishermen, as this video demonstrates. Needless to say when I come back home for visits, I always bring my fishing gear.
Brian does a program where he states that Columbus, Ohio is the fly fishing capital of the world. Many cool fish to chase here in Ohio. It doesn't suck in regard to fishing. Watch the Bass episode of the Walkers Cay Chronicles where Flip, a Florida native, catches his personal best bass.....in Ohio!
Too bad they quit making the Medalists. I would like to get one of those large diameter reel witha decent drag but $800 is well outside of my budget.
You can actually get a large arbor reel with a decent drag for well under $100 as well....check our website. Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters thanks for response
I’ve been using the same five $20-$30 reels going on 8 years without a problem. I have some expensive ones too and yes they’re smoother, but they’re not super amazing. I like hand lining fish off of the reel, so not much drag used..but good drags help with Big fish for sure. Fish On! Thanks as always MRO crew. Have a great weekend! 👍👌🎣
Thanks for being here.
Hey Brian, with madriver outfitters.
Hey...thanks for watching.
This was also how WWII tankers (though from the loosing team) made kill stripes on tank barrels.
Maybe that's where Lefty got the idea?
Very nice! Lamson is definitely in the salt game! Brian could you do a review on the liquid max? I absolutely love mine and the braid i have for backing 🤣🤣🤣🤣. You have the best fly videos out there. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Will pass along to Brian.
Good stuff
